ABOUT THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE LEARNERSHIP:
The City of Cape Town (COCT) is the second most populated, as well as the second-largest economic center in South Africa. The city's provincial government is run by Mayor Dan Plato and his group of city council members, who are responsible for ensuring the upkeep of the province's economy, legislation, security, land, water and electricity, transport, and more.
DETAILS ABOUT THE LEARNERSHIP PROGRAMME:
Location: Cape Town, Western Cape
Salary: R174 195 per annum T06
The City of Cape Town is offering a Fire Fighter learnership opportunity as part of the safety and security doctorate. Once the candidate has successfully completed their training and assessments, they will then be appointed to a permanent Learner Firefighter position.
To determine the successful candidate for the programme, all shortlisted candidates will be required to complete the following fitness tests:
- 2.4 km run (13 minutes for females and 11 minutes for males)
- Reach test (1.9 meters)
- Sit-ups (must complete 30 within 60 seconds)
- Push-ups (must complete 30 within 60 seconds)
- Dead load carries (must carry two 25kg drums over a 100 meter distance)
Once candidates have passed the physical test, they will then have to complete the following tasks:
- Pass a written assessment as well as an interview
- Submit their fingerprints/ identity numbers for the purpose of background and criminal record check
- Undergo a City medical examination
- Undergo a drug test that will be conducted at a City testing venue
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:
Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:
- Must be a South African Citizen
- Must have completed Matric/ Grade 12
- Must have passed Mathematics and Physical Science as subjects in Matric (preferred)
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must be comfortable being in confined spaces and with heights
- Must be medically and physically fit
- Must be able to work well in a team
- Must be able to handle stressful situations
- Must NOT have a criminal record
- Must successfully complete the Firefighter 1, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, as well as the First Aid Level 3 courses which the learning institution will provide

- For the duration of the training, the candidate will enter a non-permanent contract
- Candidates will be required to wear mandatory protective gear, uniform, and clothing
- Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups
