The Institution for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) is a journalism and communication training institution located in Johannesburg. The IAJ trains future communicators and journalists, aiming to support and promote both free and independent media in the country. The institution has been operating for 27 years and has trained more than 10 000 media and communication professionals in Africa. Learning that is offered at IAJ is interactive and facilitated by subject matter experts- this further supports its reputation for being an institution that celebrates the media's role in democracy.
DETAILS ABOUT THE LEARNERSHIP PROGRAMME:
Location: Parktown, Johannesburg, Gauteng
Duration: 1 year (January 2022 to December 2022)
The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism is offering a learnership opportunity to candidates interested in pursuing a career in journalism. The programme will take place both in-person (at the IAJ's office in Parktown, Johannesburg) as well as online.
The successful candidate will be immersed in the world of journalism, gaining an understanding of how to identify news stories and how to establish excellent pitch ideas to the editor. The programme also allows candidates to experience the 'behind the scenes of journalism as they see the inner workings of the newsroom and identify where news is sourced from, produced, and broadcasted to.
The learnership opportunity will run from January 2022 to December 2022 and upon successful completion, the candidate will receive an NQF level 5 in Journalism.
Specific skills you will learn during the programme:
- How to successfully interview sources and newsmakers
- How to report on different genres of news, from fashion to beauty
- How to make your audience engage in your story
- How to write for major print and broadcast news organizations
- How to handle ethical dilemmas
- How to become a 'beat' reporter
What the programme will offer you:
- Lectures that are intensive
- Mentoring from professional journalists and editors
- Practical work experience
- A monthly stipend to cover data and travel
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:
Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must have completed Matric
- Must have achieved 50% or above for English in Matric
- Must NOT have any qualifications (that is NQF level 6 and above)
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old
- Must be unemployed
- Must be available for the full duration of the learnership programme
- Must NOT have participated in/ completed a SETA programme
- Must be interested in the current affairs of South Africa
- Must have worked on a school newspaper/ at a community news organization (advantageous)
- Must have a passion for writing and telling stories
- Must be computer literate and digitally savvy
