DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:

Location: South Africa
Duration: Less than 1 year

J-Pal Africa is offering several internship opportunities to candidates interested in pursuing a career in research, communications, and policy. The internships are paid and the candidate can choose to partake in a part-time or full-time position. The programmes will start anywhere from 15 April 2022 (earliest start date) to 1 August 2022 (latest start date).
 

The following Internship programmes are available:

  • Girls, Education and Empowerment Policy Internship: This programme aims to enhance the lives of young females through informed policies by scientific evidence. J-Pal aids governments in designing policies and programmes aimed at young females by applying international evidence to local contexts throughout regions of Africa. During this programme, the candidate will support by scoping opportunities for evidence use and generation in the gender-equity space. They will also plan potential partnerships and navigate the organisation's agenda by creating communications content and engagement strategies for numerous partners. This internship opportunity is offered both remotely and in person and offers a flexible start date within June/July 2022. Candidates from anywhere in Africa are encouraged to apply.
  • DigiFI Policy Internship: DigiFI is used by J-Pal Africa to host research and initiative on digital identity and payments in Africa. The team of experts at J-Pal works closely with governments and stakeholders to build partnerships as well as gain an understanding of their priorities, running research projects across Africa. This programme seeks a candidate that is an excellent communicator and organiser that can support the company's various outreach projects. The candidate will be responsible for supporting the request for proposals process to aid in decisions relating to project funding, project development, and evidence dissemination. This internship opportunity is offered both remotely and in-person and has a flexible start date within June/July 2022. Candidates from anywhere in Africa are encouraged to apply.
  • Research Internship: This programme, located in Johannesburg Gauteng, seeks a candidate that will aid in lab-in-field data collection activities as part of J-Pal's ongoing labour market study. Some activities the candidate will engage in are desk-based research, assisting with fieldwork, data analysis, developing project materials, and events coordination. This internship opportunity is offered in Johannesburg, in-person, and offers a flexible start date within June/July 2022. Only candidates who have the legal right to work on a full-time/ part-time basis in South Africa will be considered.
  • Communications Internship: During this internship, the candidate will provide support to the application of the organisation's communications strategy by gathering and analysing information about its target audiences. The candidate will also synthesize evidence, organise events, and draft tweets when needed, thus further aiding J-Pal Africa's communications activities and content generation. This internship opportunity is offered remotely and starts at the beginning of May. Candidates from anywhere in Africa are encouraged to apply.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:

  • Must be a citizen of any African country (if applying for the communications and policy internships)
  • Must have legal right to work part time or full time in South Africa (if applying for the research internship)
  • Must have completed a Bachelor's/ Honour's/ Master's/ any other advanced degree in Economics/ Statistics, Development/related field
  • OR
  • Must be studying towards a degree in the above-mentioned fields and be in your final year
  • Must have at least 1 completed MicroMasters course (applicable to MicroMasters students)
  • Must have competitive MicroMasters grades (75% minimum) – (preferable and only applicable to MicroMasters students)
  • Must have completed multiple DEDP courses, such as Data Analysis for Social Scientists and Designing and Running Randomized Evaluations (preferable and only applicable to MicroMasters students)
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Advantageous: fluent in an additional South African language
  • Advantageous: fluent in French
  • Must have a keen interest in social policy and development research
  • Must have excellent organisation skills
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Advantageous: able to code in R/ Santa/ similar software
