DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:
Location: Western Cape (various)
Duration: 12 months
Number of positions available: 6
Salary: R3575.75 per month
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is offering Patient Care Assistant Developmental Youth Internships at several facilities, to candidates interested in pursuing a career within the Health and Wellness sector.
Internships are available at these facilities:
- Ceres Hospital (2 positions available)
- Brewelskloof Hospital (Worcester) (1 position available)
- Stellenbosch Hospital (Cape Winelands Health District) (1 position available)
- Worcester Hospital (Chief Directorate: Rural Health Services) (2 positions available)
Key performance areas of the programme:
- Assisting patients
- Aiding patients in transporting/ moving themselves
- Ensuring equipment is kept clean
- Taking on the role of a queue marshal
- Assisting nurses when lifting and turning patients
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:
Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:
- Must have completed a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC)/ Grade 9 (Standard 7)
- Must have completed a Home Base Care: NQF 2 Certificate (6-month accredited course)
- Must have experience working as a Caregiver in a Healthcare setting
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old
- Must be physically strong (i.e. able to lift patients)
- Must be able to stand for long periods
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work well with supervisors, colleagues, and the public
- Must be able to work well in a team
- Must be fluent (oral and written) in at least 2 of the 3 official languages of the Western Cape

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, led by Health Minister Normafrench Mbombo, has the main responsibility of delivering a comprehensive package of health services to the people of the province. The department provides public healthcare within its 428 public primary care facilities, 32 district hospitals, 6 regional hospitals, and 3 center hospitals. The Western Cape's 3 center hospitals, consisting of Groote Schuur Hospital, Tygerberg Hospital, and Red Cross War Memorial Hospital, are responsible for providing tertiary care to the public. The department also runs several specialised facilities such as 4 psychiatric hospitals, 6 tuberculosis hospitals, and a rehabilitation center.
