ABOUT THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE INTERNSHIP:

In 1877, the National Museum was established; it comprises multiple rare collections and displays from all around the world. To this day, the Museum continues to be an institution that focuses on cultural and natural history, and art too. The Museum holds a number of educational programmes reaching a diversity of audiences which allows them to learn through active engagement and enjoyable experiences.
 

DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:

Location: Bloemfontein, Free State

Oliewenhuis Art Museum (as part of the National Museum of Bloemfontein) is offering an internship opportunity for the position of Art Museum Guides. Candidates will be required to interact with visitors on a professional level, interact with different types of people, handle any queries from visitors as well as have adequate knowledge about visual art. During the programme, candidates will also have the responsibility of ensuring that the security and safety of all exhibition artworks are maintained and be required to work intermittent shifts during the week/weekends.

Key Performance Areas of the Programme:

  • Ensuring that all artworks on exhibition are kept safe and secure
  • Interacting professionally with all visitors and handling any questions they may have regarding Oliewenhuis Art Museum exhibitions (both permanent and temporary)
  • Conducting Guided Tours that are informative
  • Providing assistance with exhibitions, general administration tasks, educational workshops, projects and events, activities, and after-hour events.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:

  • Must be currently studying towards or have completed a Visual Art qualification or equivalent
  • Must have knowledge/ experience of heritage and visual art (advantageous)
  • Must have a high command of the English language
  • Must be able to speak Sotho (advantageous)
  • Must have exceptional communication skills
  • Must be outgoing and friendly
  • Must have excellent public speaking skills
  • Must be able to physically accompany people
  • Must be willing to engage in research for exhibitions
  • Must be enthusiastic and have a willingness to learn
  • Must have an inquiring mind
  • Must be interested/ experienced in Art Education
