ABOUT THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE INTERNSHIP:
Located in the University of Witwatersrand, the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a famous African-led research institute that aims to find the health problems of the continent. Wits RHI addresses many major public health concerns that affect our regions, such as HIV, vaccinology, and sexual/reproductive health. They address and manage these concerns by engaging in multi-disciplinary research, pioneering, accountable technical support and change within health services; as well as factual policy advocacy and development with stakeholders (both regional and national.)
DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:

Contract term: 12 months
Salary/ stipend: R5 000 per month

The Wits Health Consortium are inviting candidates for all 9 provinces, to apply for the 12 month Social Work Internship. The programme is offered by Wits Health Consortium, in partnership with the Department of Health's Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA). This programme aims to support 1210 recently qualified unemployed Social Workers, and is made possible due to the Minister of Higher Education’s request for SETAs to provide funding in support of the Health and Social Sectors during the pandemic.
Social Worker interns will be stationed at health and social development centres across the country, where they will assist with the social and health consequences of the pandemic. Interns will work alongside experienced social workers, where they will provide social work services to health care and social development users. Interns will gain vital practical experience from experienced social workers, as well as insight into social issues.
Duties and responsibilities:
- providing health care users with crisis intervention and psycho-social support
- providing individual and group social work services to the elderly, children, adolescents and those with disabilities
- providing staff with support in reporting cases of suspected abuse and neglect to the Department of Social Development
- performing home visits and assessments
- assisting with identifying and matching clients in need of social support to social service agencies
- following up on requests made for social support
- supporting the Ward Based Outreach Teams with their work
- keeping in contact with other service providers and social service agencies, to ensure that health care users needs are provided
- running food programmes and other support at the community level
- completing records, forms and reports, as well as maintaining records (promptly and efficiently)
- keeping current with latest legislation, health and social development policies and latest social work practices
- other duties as requested by the Department of Social Development provincial coordinators
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:
Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must have completed a Degree in Social Work (which must be accredited with South African Council for Social Service Professions and the SAQA and Council for Higher Education)
- Must be registered with SACSSP (registration assistance may be provided)
- Must be unemployed
