ABOUT THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE LEARNERSHIP:

Dis-Chem was formed in the year 1978 by recently qualified pharamacists, Ivan and Lynette Saltzman, when they opened their first retail pharmacy in Mondeor, Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1984 the second retail pharmacy opened at the Randridge Mall in Randburg, Johannesburg.

It wasn't until the late 1980s that Dis-Chem started expanding its offering of non-pharmaceutical products and opened a third retail pharmacy. Today, Dis-Chem prides themselves on offering healthy foods, sport supplements, health and well-being products, and beauty products.
 

DETAILS ABOUT THE LEARNERSHIP PROGRAMME:

Locations: various stores in South Africa
Contract term: fixed term position as Dispensary Support until registered with the SAPC as learner basic assistants. Once learners qualify as basic pharmacist assistants, they will be offered permanent employment.
Salary and benefits: learners will receive a market related salary; medical aid; provident fund and a staff account

Dis-Chem Pharmacies are looking for learners to join their Dispensary Support Learnership programme in branches across the country. Learners will complete the learner basic pharmacist assistant course, in which they will grasp the underlying principles of all areas related to the pharmaceutical environment and dispensing.

Learners will be employed as Dispensary Support (Fixed Term position) until they are registered as learner basic assistants, with the SAPC. After qualifiying as a basic pharmacist assistant, they will be offered permanent employment.
 

Services/ duties to be conducted during the programme:

  • Selling schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances
  • Assisting with compounding, manipulation or preparation of a non-sterile medicine or scheduled substance, per a formula and Standard Operating Procedures approved by the responsible pharmacist
  • Assisting with unpacking and merchandising of stock and cleaning of dispensary and OTC shelves approved by the responsible pharmacist
  • Other duties requested by the Dispensary Manager
  • Learning to interpret scripts and act in a professional and responsible manner and within the legal requirements in accordance with the South African Pharmaceutical Council
  • Picking, packing, labelling and checking of medication, with awareness of common dosages and important drug interactions
  • Check all medications for accuracy by a pharmacist and signed by a pharmacist
  • Assisting with stock control (manage cleanliness and packing organisation of shelves and medicine expiry dates) of Schedule 1 to 5 medicines or scheduled substances
  • Following up with patients about script tracking report as requested by the dispensary manager and follow up appointments
  • Assisting with call centre scripts and patient service telephone calls
  • Providing information to customers in order to promote health
  • Assisting with scheme authorization of chronic, HIV and AIDS and oncology medication
  • Reporting of low or out of stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager
  • Receiving dispensary stock in accordance with the SOP set out by the company

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have a clear criminal record
  • Must have a clear credit record
  • Must have completed Matric (NSC)
  • Must have passed Mathematics (HG), Life Science and or Physical Science in Matric
  • Must have achieved a minimum average of 50% in Matric
  • Must be fluent in English and at least 1 other language (reading, writing and speaking)
  • Must be computer literate
  • Must have strong numerical skills
  • Must have good time management skills
  • Must be deadline driven
  • Must be able to work under pressure
  • Must have close attention to detail
  • Must have good communication skills and listening skills

  • Must complete a proficiency test, approving learners to register with Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant

The following will be advantageous to your application but are not essential:

  • Retail FMCG experience
  • Dis-Chem front shop experience
  • Good performance record
  • Drug and family planning and complementary medicine experience
  • Unisolv, SAP and E-Scripting experience
