DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:
Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng
Duration: 12 months
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is offering internship opportunities to unemployed South African youth with relevant qualifications. Interns will receive a monthly stipend during the course of the programme.
The following internship programmes are currently available:
Communications, Marketing & PR Internship
Interns will be expected to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities:
- Production of creative communications content that can be packaged to suit different needs within the organisation – including pitching, writing, and documenting stories for the Foundations social media platforms, websites, and newsletter (can be written, photographic, video based, curatorial etc).
- Assisting with creating marketing campaigns to support the Foundation’s programmes and initiatives.
- Conducting research on thematic areas the Foundation’s work, digital and social media trend analysis, as well as news monitoring and social listening.
- Performing general administration duties to support of the department’s goals.
Production & Editing Internship
Duties of this internship role have not been disclosed.
Archives & Research Internship
Interns will be expected to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities:
- Accessioning, processing, sorting, and maintaining physical and digital archival materials, in accordance with archival standards.
- Updating and standardising metadata in relation to NMF collections.
- Providing assistance with implementing various special projects, including digitisation, publication development, and exhibition preparation, as required.
- Responding and assisting researchers who consult the archive.
- Providing assistance with exhibition tours on occasion.
- Taking part in and assisting with various NMF activities as required by all staff members.
CEO’s Office Internship
Interns will be expected to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities:
- Prepare and disseminate correspondence, memos, and forms
- File and update contact information of employees - HR and external partners
- Support and facilitate the completion of regular reports – (Follow up on reviewed/ signed minutes)
- Document expenses and hand in reports – (reconciliations)
- Draft minutes and following up on action items for the IP & Governance as well as EXCO
- Assist receptionist when required
Finance & Procurement Internship
Interns will be expected to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities:
- Shadowing members of the finance department as they perform their duties
- Providing assistance with research, filling, data entry and recording and maintaining accurate and complete financial records
- Working on SAP system
- Performing additional tasks or projects to learn more about accounting and office operations
- Assist receptionist when required
Mandela Day & Outreach Internship
Interns will be expected to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities:
- Assist the Mandela Day and Outreach team with logistics and planning for all departmental events/ activations and workshops.
- Providing support for planning and coordination of travel logistics.
- Minute taking for meetings and contributing to departmental/ donor reports.
- Providing assistance with research on key focus areas for the Mandela Day and Outreach Programme.
- Providing support for stakeholder relations for the department.
- Working closely alongside other departments to align activities and ensure that departmental plans are shared on time with relevant the department(s).
- Capturing and collating data from various sources.
- Work will be related to, but not limited to, the focus area of Food and Nutrition in South Africa, regionally and internationally.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

Communications, Marketing & PR Internship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
- Must be unemployed
- Preference may be given to candidates residing in Gauteng region, as well as candidates from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and candidates living with disabilities
- Must have completed a qualification in any of these fields: Communications, Journalism and or relevant writing or communications experience in the NGO sector, media, or marketing (or a related qualification that you can motivate relates to the work of the communications programme at NMF)
- Must have recently graduated
- Must have little or no full-time work experience – preference will be given to candidates who have NOT previously participated in an internship opportunity within a South African NGO
- Must have excellent journalism and creative writing skills
- Must be able to write for public consumption
- Must be computer literate
- Must have experience working in Microsoft Word & Excel, website design, Google apps, as well as on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
- Must be able to plan and prioritise work
- Must be able to meet deadlines
- Must be able to work independently
- Must be able to work in a team
- Must be a self-starter
- Must be able to multitask
- Must be able to prioritize across multiple projects and social media platforms
- Must pay close attention to detail
- Must be systematic and thorough when conducting work
Production & Editing
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
- Must be unemployed
- Preference may be given to candidates residing in Gauteng region, as well as candidates from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and candidates living with disabilities
- Must have completed a qualification in videography and editing and or relevant production experience in the creative industry, media etc (or a related qualification that you can motivate relates to the work of the communications programme at NMF)
- Must have recently graduated
- Must have little or no full-time work experience – preference will be given to candidates who have NOT previously participated in an internship opportunity within a South African NGO
- Must have excellent photo and video editing software skills (Photoshop, InDesign, iMovie, Adobe etc.)
- Must be computer literate
- Must have experience working in Microsoft Word & Excel, website design, Google apps, as well as on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
- Must be able to write for public consumption
- Must have an interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues
- Must have an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa
- Must be able to plan and prioritise work
- Must be able to meet deadlines
- Must be able to work independently
- Must be able to multitask
- Must be able to prioritize across multiple projects and social media platforms
- Must pay close attention to detail
- Must be systematic and thorough when conducting work
Archives & Research Internship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
- Must be unemployed
- Preference may be given to candidates residing in Gauteng region, as well as candidates from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and candidates living with disabilities
- Must have completed a qualification in any of these fields: information studies, history, or heritage management (or a related qualification that you can motivate relates to the work of the archival programme at NMF)
- Must have recently graduated
- Must have little or no full-time work experience – preference will be given to candidates who have NOT previously participated in an internship opportunity within a South African NGO
- Must have some experience with working with archival collections
- Must have an understanding of the need for careful handling of archival material and artifacts (preferable)
- Must be computer literate
- Must have experience working with Microsoft Office software
- Must be fit and able to lift archive boxes and move loaded carts
- Must have an interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues
- Must have an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa
- Must be able to plan and prioritise work
- Must be able to meet deadlines
- Must be able to work independently
- Must pay close attention to detail
- Must be systematic and thorough when conducting work
CEO’s Office Internship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
- Must be unemployed
- Preference may be given to candidates residing in Gauteng region, as well as candidates from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and candidates living with disabilities
- Must have completed one of these qualifications: BA or BA Law or final year student (or a related qualification that you can motivate relates to the work of CEO’s office at the NMF)
- Must have recently graduated
- Must have little or no full-time work experience – preference will be given to candidates who have NOT previously participated in an internship opportunity within a South African NGO
- Must have an interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues
- Must have an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa
- Must be computer literate
- Must have experience working with Microsoft Office software
- Must have good file management skills and be able to convert documents from hard copy to soft copy
- Must be able to plan and prioritise work

Finance & Procurement Internship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
- Must be unemployed
- Preference may be given to candidates residing in Gauteng region, as well as candidates from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and candidates living with disabilities
- Must have completed a 3-year Bachelors Degree, Diploma or equivalent qualification in either of these fields: Accounting, Finance or a related discipline
- Must be computer literate
- Must have experience working with Microsoft Office software
- Must have excellent administrative skills
- Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate with all types of people at different levels
- Must be able to carry out instructions effectively
- Must have excellent communication skill – verbal and written
Mandela Day & Outreach Internship
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old
- Must be unemployed
- Preference may be given to candidates residing in Gauteng region, as well as candidates from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and candidates living with disabilities
- Must have completed a Social Science or Commerce qualification or be currently studying towards such a qualification
- Must be computer literate
- Must have experience working with Microsoft Office software
- Must have an interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues
- Must have an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa
- Must be able to plan and prioritise work
- Must be able to meet deadlines
- Must be able to work independently
- Must pay close attention to detail
- Must be systematic and thorough when conducting work
- Must be fluent in English and at least one other official South African language
