ABOUT THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE INTERNSHIP:

The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) is the agency of government, responsible for holding and maintaining all published materials relating to Southern Africa. NSLA's main goals are to actively contribute to cultural, socioeconomic, educational, innovative, and scientific development. They achieve this by recording, collecting, making available, and preserving the country's national documentary heritage as well as promoting awareness about it.
 

DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:

Locations: Pretoria, Gauteng and Cape Town, Western Cape
Duration: 6 months
Stipend: R5 700 per month
Number of positions available: 103

The NLSA is offering internship positions for the role of Librarian Trainee. There are 53 positions available at the Cape Town Campus and 50 at the Pretoria. Owing to the Government's goal of youth employment and empowerment, candidates aged 18 to 35 will be given preference.
 

The main aim of the programme is to aid the NLSA in conserving, digesting, making accessible, and securing its heritage assets collections. Candidates will receive real-life work experience which will aid them in enhancing their skills and experience- making them a front-runner in the job market.

Key performance areas of the programme:

  • Engaging in preservation and conservation services
  • Engaging in collections management and Bibliographic services
  • Following all specific instructions
  • Ensuring that weekly and monthly reports are prepared
  • Rotating between similar roles when requested to do so
  • Working shifts that are rotational (this includes weekends)

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:

  • Must have completed one of these qualifications: Bachelor of Library and Information Studies, Bachelors Degree and a Post Graduate Diploma in Library Science or Information Studies, Bachelor of Technology in Library Science or Information Studies
  • Must have completed an Honours or Masters Degree and/or LIASA membership (advantageous)
  • Must be computer literate (advantageous)
  • Must be 18 to 35 years old (preferable)
  • Must have knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC)
  • Must be able to perform physical work
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Must have a strong work ethic
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to work well in a team
  • Must be able to work in a high pressured environment
