DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:

Duration: 1 year
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and the Bureau for Economic Research (BER) at Stellenbosch University are offering a 2023 Economist Internship Programme, to graduates and students completing their postgraduate studies.
The aim of the internship programme is to provide practical training to appropriately qualified graduates so that they are able to function as economists in the private and/or public sector.
The successful candidates will work alongside BER economists for 1 year to gain experience in all the aspects of business orientated macroeconomic analysis.
The intern will be employed by the SARB, but will spend the first year of employment in training at the BER. Interns will receive a competitive salary during the course of the programme.
Important dates of the internship programme:
- Recruitment will take place in the months of May and June 2022.
- Interviews will be held in the months of July and August 2022.
- The internship will commence in January 2023 and end in December 2023.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:
Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must have completed an Honours or Masters degree in Economics (or will complete it by January 2023) with Macroeconomics as a subject at a post-graduate level
- Must be fluent in English
- Must have excellent communication skills
- Must have excellent writing skills

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) was established in 1921 and is the central bank of South Africa. SARB ensures that financial stability and price for South Africans are maintained through a service of good economic well-being. SARB's other responsibilities are designing/distributing banknotes/coins, regulating the South African financial sector, ensuring the cash reserve requirements are set for the bank, management of interest rates, and ensuring continuous stability of this.
The Bureau for Economic Research (BER) is one of the oldest economic research institutes in South Africa. It was established in 1944 and is part of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) at Stellenbosch University. Over the years, the BER has built a local and international reputation for independent, objective and authoritative economic research and forecasting.
